The Obidos Lagoon

We are situated on a beautiful saltwater lagoon – the largest in Portugal. It is a nature reserve as well as a hive of watersports activity. Serene, first thing in the morning, with herons and fishermen, it has a path all the way round. Ideal for walking, running and cycling.

The path is bordered by the lagoon one one side and wetlands on the other.

The first bike ride of many …

Stopping to check the view

There are so many wild flowers coming into bloom now and they smell lovely.

The lagoon is surrounded by bird hides or look out towers – Paul admiring the view and pointing in the direction of the sea and the wind on this day.

I absolutely love the way the Portuguese look after their coastal areas. There are several of these hides / look outs around the lagoon and they are made so well.

These information boards are also found all around the lagoon highlighting the type and frequency of birds that visit.

Unfortunately we will not be here long enough to see many of these.

An innovative idea for a bench / bike rack. A perfect idea for this area, or anywhere really! Multi-functional, strong and stylish, this composite wood bench will last the rigours of the Portuguese weather!

Beautiful views and an amazing scent on the breeze from all the wild flowers at this time of year.

Small bits of beach where boats are launched all around – also good for swimming or launching your kite or wing.

After hurting my back last year, I am trying to regain fitness so I went for a run/walk around the lagoon in the early morning. This is the perfect time for running before the sun gets too hot – in my opinion. The lagoon is serene at this time also, abounding with fishermen and wildlife.

Two herons – the most I saw were 6 at one time.
