Peniche – 24th May 2025

Part 2 of a trip to an amazing little town on Portugals Silver Coastline

Bright, beautiful and bustling main street next to the Marina.

The town is partly surrounded by a defense wall and is a peninsular. The name Peniche means “almost island”.

There is a busy marina, which I always find an exhilarating sight especially on a sunny day, for some reason.

We came across this stronghold, which turned out to be an old prison.

It was supposed to be unescapeable.

However, there are famous incidents where prisoners have managed to escape. One of them chipped away at the door hinges with a knife, and jumped into the ocean

Amazing view from the roof of the prison.

Monument to fallen heroes in Portugal within the grounds.

A single Gazania flower in a sea of concrete and gravel. Some flowers can bloom in even the harshest of environments.

You can walk around the ramparts of the prison and sea defenses.

Some great views and a cooling sea breeze.

Seagulls making the most of a freshwater fountain.

A school project on tiles.

Celebrating Liberation day

Colourful fish as street decoration.

Lots of old churches.

Another town fountain and statue of lace making.

The Man of the Sea immortalised.

Handy map of the town.

and places of interest.

Peniche is not JUST a surfers paradise 🏄🙂😎
