Lisbon part 2

Because, like London, you need more than a day.

Tram 28

We caught the flixbus again for another go at Lisbon.

We really wanted to go on the famous Tram 28 that we missed out on last time. However, we didn’t get there early enough to miss the queues. So, we went on Tram 12 first.

Which was great, but was only a fraction of the route.  So, after a bit of deliberation, we decided to join the extensive queue for ‘the one’.

We spent 2 hours chatting to Americans, Canadians, Japanese, and a friendly and equally persistent Indian couple while waiting for our turn.

At times, it seemed that the queue only got shorter when whole groups gave up and left.  Then, like buses, 4 trams arrived all at once!

The journey was as good as we hoped, with ‘breathe in’ moments as we swerved through the narrow, steep inclines only just missing parked cars.  I half expected to see scratches after hearing the screeching of the tram brakes.  Hilarious moments when some motorists thought they had right of way – arguing and gesticulating with the driver, who just sat there until they backed up.

We walked past various historical landmarks and got the Bica funicular

Which provided a respite from the midday heat 🥵

And led us down to the Time Out Market, just in time for lunch

We were very impressed with this classy market, from the black and white uniform signage of each establishment to the inclusive layout of the tables and benches…

and from the extensive array of food and drink to the people clearing tables

We walked past Pink Street on our way to the Alfama district for a quick look, stopped for a refreshing iced cola and admired some tiled street art.

Before getting on a cable car high above the River Tagus.  There were fantastic views of the immense span of this bridge crossing the Tagus, and all the modern buildings down this end of Lisbon, which made me forget about the swaying of the cabin in the breeze.

Last stop – Vasco da Gama shopping centre, right next to the flixbus station, for a frozen yoghurt ice cream – mmm !!  Great shopping centre, and pretty amazing bus station building.
