Mexico – Yucatan Peninsular
Continuing our travels round the world in our 60’s
From: 7th December 2025 to 5th January 2026

The bus journey from Belize to Mexico was delayed at the border in Chetumal, so we had to buy a later ticket for an overnight trip to Cancun. I am happy to say it was comfortable and uneventful.

Our 1st floor apartment in the city of Cancun.

There were lots of Kitesurfing schools listed round the coastline of Cancun, so we messaged them to meet up.

Just south of Cancun the little town of Puerto Morelos was one of the first we visited. It was full of character, but after speaking to the owner of the kite school it transpires that they didn’t ride in the bay due to environmental restrictions.

Another kite school we visited was in Isla Blanca. Here there was a beautiful stretch of the whitest sand and clear water. However to reach it meant driving down a sandy track that was so rutted we doubted the hire car would survive the journey more than a couple of times.

Then we heard back from Ventaigua kite, who turned out to be the nearest, and their set-up was perfect.
Most of the other kite schools listed in the area were attached to one of the many all-inclusive luxury hotels and so we were precluded.

We had to notify the club the day before so that gate security let us through, and pay a fee to use the facilities each day, but it was a good set up.

This was a really friendly club, and they made us feel welcome.

We even kitesurfed on Christmas morning here 😎
It wasn’t packed out busy which was great for me…😀
… as I didnt have to dodge so many other kiters!

The laundrette we used gave us Christmas biscuits

Our apartment was situated in the city with many shopping malls, local markets, and supermarkets nearby.

Some unusual items in the supermarket.

Dried Hibiscus flowers, locally called Jamaica, for infusing as a hot or cold drink, and dried black and red chillies, all piled high.

The band were great at this local bar, playing a mix of songs in English and Spanish.

View from one of the malls.
The beaches in this area of Mexico are absolutely stunning – with soft white sand, warm crystal clear water and a gentle slope – the waves are quite powerful and fun 😁

Lunch at Senor Frogs came with balloon animals!! 🎈

Another no wind day – so a trip to the Marina Puerto Cancun shopping mall.

Fab weather again – great for kiting at Ventaigua!

We gave Ikarus Kite at Isla Blanca another visit and were surprised to find the ruts and pot holes had all been filled and levelled!

Ikarus are situated on a thin spit of land with ocean one side and a lagoon on the other. The lagoon is so extensive, and so flat, that we were speeding along. I think its the fastest I have ever gone on a kite!!
We stayed for food in the restaurant chatting till late with other kiters.

After Christmas we drove up to El Cuyo, further up the Yucatan Peninsular, and got a room in a quirky guest house just yards from the beach.

We much prefer these little places to the big city, to be honest.
This is Paul on our first day in El Cuyo. Good wind, but it was blowing exactly perpendicular to the beach meaning you have to tack backwards and forwards alot, while trying to jump over many rows of breaking waves, to get out to the back.
Paul is great at this but I find it more difficult and, after wiping out a few times, I gave up on this day.
However the next day I gave it another go, didnt try to get out to the back of the waves like Paul does, and enjoyed tacking backwards and forewards, jumping over the waves when I could.
This was fun!

There is a thin strip of sandy land running between El Cuyo and Rio Lagartos, with ocean one side and a wildlife laggoon on the other. It turned out to be a single deeply rutted track but we wanted to see the flamingos.

On a strip much thinner than the road above we met another vehicle – we drove onto the sandy verge to let them pass – and got stuck. Half an hour later another car arrived and with everyone pushing and me steering we managed to get back on the track, whew!!!

There are thousands of flamingos in this biosphere reserve.

Rio Lagartos itself is a small fishing offering boat tours.

Very quiet in the first week of January…

We were quite surprised to spot this crocodile sun bathing in between some of the fishing boats right on the sea front!!
10 minutes later he was gone.

El Cuyo is quiet and beautiful. We went swimming every morning, often with the Pelicans fishing right next to us.
Back in Cancun we had a thunderstorm that lasted an hour – Paul slept through all of it! 😴

More “no wind” days encouraged a ferry ride to nearby Islas Mujeres.

More sandy beaches, snorkelling, and MUSA – the underwater museum of art – most of which is below 10 metres deep so only viewable by diving.
We did see 4 bits of it using snorkels

These pics are from the internet as we didnt take our Gopro. There was also statues of people sat round tables. It was a little underwhelming and quite rushed I have to say.

Nice sunset on the ferry back to the mainland.
Our time in Mexico came to an end – there were many other parts we could have visited – we might go back 🙂
We are travelling back to the UK to meet a very special new person 🥰😍
but going via New York for 3 days…
